BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - University of West Florida Head Coach, Derrick Racine, has been named Gulf South Conference East Division Women's Tennis Coach of the Year, it was announced today by the Conference office. Meanwhile, Argonaut Senior Taylor Brewster was named East Division Player of the Year.
Racine wins the award for a record 7th time in his UWF career. The Argonaut head coach guided UWF to their 11th GSC title in program history and a 20-10 regular season record in 2011.
Brewster, a native of Fergus, Ontario, is the 9th Argonaut to win GSC East Player of the Year honors and the first to do so since 2008. The senior posted a 17-13 record in 2011 and was undefeated in GSC play. She is a three-time All-GSC selection.
Joining Brewster on the All-GSC team are sophomores Luisa Sonnervig and Jacqueline March. Sonnervig, from Sao Paulo, Brazil, posted a team-high 27 victories this season and did not lose a match in GSC play. March, from Santa Rosa Beach, went 18-13 in singles competition and won a team-high 22 doubles points.
Ranked 7th in the nation according to the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll, UWF opens play at the NCAA Division II South Regional tournament on May 1.
